As many of you know, the political climate in this country can be a source that fuels great tension across the entire nation and around the world. Many of you are legal professionals yourself, or work in companies that have vast legal resources. To help prevent chaos and international crisis, I ENCOURAGE YOU to use this local example as talking points with your colleagues to better understand them, as well as to continue to develop your own ideas about our legal system.
The FBI, on its website, reminds us of a loose interpretation of "terrorism." "The violent extremist threat is not limited to those with Islamist ideology. “Sovereign Citizens: A Growing Domestic Threat to Law Enforcement” focuses on a loosely knit group of individuals who have renounced their US citizenship and believe that federal, state, and local governments operate illegally. These individuals typically act alone, committing white collar crimes and creating false documents, but their behavior can escalate to violence..."
"Any person who comes here from another country and carries out the commission of an hate crime on another"... they are considered "terrorists," according to the FBI's website.
These "terrorists" are people who are indeed criminals. They should be held accountable for their actions in a court of law. This country prides itself on a person's right to a fair trial. There is no excuse for people of any race or religion trying to avoid this process. Anyone charged, properly, with a crime are immediately entitled to seek private counsel and be represented by an experienced attorney in a criminal court. When the competence and resources of our local law enforcement groups are in question, it is the People's responsibility to oversee the judicial process and ensure a fair application of Justice.
This fundamental ideology applies to everyone accused of a crime whether it is a misdemeanor or a felony.
I know you all have personal "opinions" and strong emotions that shape the way you respond to your community and participate in your local government. I want to ask you to apply those standards correctly to the situation that I am providing for you here in this message.
What do you think SHOULD be done?
